A-Z of University and Guild Support Services

Below is a list of some of the main support services provided by both the university and the Student’s Guild.  

Advice Service

The Student’s Guild advice service provide free, impartial, confidential advice and support to students with issues relating to your course, finances or housing. They also provide support schemes for mature students, care leavers, parents, asylum seekers and students who don’t have the support of a family network. More information can be found here.  

Career Zone

The Career Zone aims to help students prepare for life and work after university. They support a wide range of inquiries including CV and application form advice; booking 1:1 appointments; advice on finding work experience, graduate jobs, or postgraduate study; and provide guidance for interviews. They also host free events and workshops.

Disability Advice and Support

The university disability advisors and AccessAbility team provide support for students with a disability or long term health condition. This includes specific learning difficulties, long-term health conditions, sensory or mobility impairments, mental health conditions and neurodiversity. They can create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP); arrange academic adjustments and any other support you may need whilst at university.

  • Book a Quick Query appointment by calling 01392 723880 – these appointments are bookable on the day by calling this number and take place remotely via Teams. They are 20 minutes long and are held Mon-Fri 13:00-15:00. They are offered on a first come first served basis and can help answer any queries you have about the services AccessAbility offer, advice on applying for Disabled Student’s Allowances, arranging support and ILP’s.

Emotional and Mental Health Support

The university wellbeing practitioners support students experiencing a range of mental health difficulties and can assist students in getting the support they need.

  • Initial appointments are 20 minutes long to discuss how best to move forward. They can be online or in-person, depending on what type of appointment you want will determine how you book it, please refer to this guidance for how to book one of these appointments.  

Estate Patrol

Campus security team are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Able to provide students with personal safety advice and products, first aid and welfare, and respond to any SafeZone app alerts.

Exehale Rooms

A wellbeing space located on both Streatham and St Luke’s campus that has been co-designed by students and staff to be a quiet and relaxing area for students who need to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of campus life!  

  • The Exehale room on Streatham is located in Devonshire House, floor 2 (directly above Comida) and is open 08:00-22:00, seven days a week.  
  • The Exehale room on St Lukes is located in Holnicote and is open from 08:00-18:00 during weekdays.

Exeter Speaks Out

The University of Exeter is an inclusive community, where everyone has the right to be treated with respect. If you have been subject to intimidation, harassment, bullying or inappropriate behaviour, or you have witnessed this kind of behaviour you are encouraged to report it and get support.

  • A flow chart of Exeter Speaks Out reporting processes can be found here to give you an indication of what the reporting process entails.  
  • Dignity and Respect Advisors are members of staff across the university who have volunteered and are trained in their roles. They provide a confidential and informal service to anyone who has been involved in a case of harassment or bullying and can listen to what has happened, provide help and support and explain the options with regards to making a complaint. If you feel you need support with this process you can find your dignity and respect advisors here.  

Multifaith Chaplaincy

A team made up of volunteers from a variety of faith backgrounds that are here to support student’s wellbeing. They provide confidential pastoral care and support to all students, faith and non-faith. They can also provide information on faith and worldview activities or places of worship at the university and in the community.

Nightline

A confidential listening and information service, run by fully trained student volunteers for all students at Exeter university including undergrad, postgrad, international student or distance learners.

Peer Support groups

There are numerous peer support groups at the University of Exeter ran by students. Time and time again we’re shown the power of peer support – if you’re contemplating signing up we definitely recommend giving it a go and seeing if it’s for you!  

  • Eating Difficulties Peer Support Group: A support group ran by students which is overseen by an eating difficulty specialist. It is a safe, friendly, non-judgemental and recovery focused support group. They have an instagram and facebook page and are contactable on edpeersupport@groups.exeterguild.com.
  • Fatigue Social Group: A student support group designed for anyone who experiences fatigue and share experiences. The group is not just people with a diagnosed condition and encourages everyone to pop in at any point during the year. The group is faciliatted by AccessAbility and Wellbeing staff and is a relaxed environment where you can chat, play games and do craft. Details on group can be found here.  
  • Positive Wellbeing Peer Support Group: A student ran group that aims to support student wellbeing at university. They create a safe, confidential and informal wellbeing support network. They provide a listening ear and supportive group environment in their weekly sessions as well as group activities throughout the year. The group are active on instagram and post all their upcoming events, activities and lots of helpful resources on there.  
  • The Autism Spectrum Commmunity (ASC) Social Group: A student social group that welcomes any student identifies with autism spectrum conditions (such as Asperger's syndrome), or believes they would benefit from being involved. The group is faciliatted by two AccessAbility advisors and involves varying activities such as games or crafts – it is not essential you take part in the activities if you do not want. Residence Life Team

The Residence Life Team Are here to help you settle into life at Exeter and offer advice and support if you are finding things difficult. They can help with any practical questions about accommodation, concerns around living with others, flat disputes, conflict resolution, Exeter living, events/activities, and health and welfare concerns. They encourage you to reach out to them with any concerns you may have as they form part of the wellbeing services and will be able to direct you in the right direction of any support you may require.

  • Student mentors visit university accommodations every few weeks with useful information about what is happening for students, you can also approach the mentors with any concerns you may be having.  

Student Health Centre

The Student Health Centres have doctors and nurse practitioners and can help with medical problems as well as issues relating to university life, including exam stress, or making lifestyle changes. You can find out more information and register online here.

Student Wellbeing Services

Work closely with the AccessAbility team, mental health practitioners and NHS services. They encourage any student experiencing challenging times to visit their website and have a look at the host of resources, apps and webinars they have available on there. They also have advisors who can help you get the support you need - you can book an initial appointment with an advisor here.

Study Zone

Provides learning resources, drop-ins and workshops on a range of study skills topics such as academic writing, referencing, time management, exams and revision and digital skills. They also have a peer support scheme where students can be supported by more experienced students in later years with either academic support or help with the transition to university life.

TALKWORKS

An NHS talking therapies service that can help if you are feeling stressed, anxious, are experiencing ongoing low mood, or are having difficulty sleeping. They are a free and confidential service provided by trained therapists that can help you get back on track by providing you with a variety of tools and techniques.  Sessions can be 1:1 (face-to-face, over the phone, or by video call).  

  • This is a self-referral service so you do not need a referral from the GP. You can self-refer online or over the phone (0300 555 3344).  
  • Sessions can be early morning and evening to suit you, Mon-Fri.

  • They also hold interactive group courses and wellbeing workshops
